My Journey with Pottery

I've gained a deeper understanding of why I'm drawn to what I do. I was born a maker - a creator!

Growing up in a fast paced, materialistic country - Singapore. We were told to prioritise studies to get into a good school. Enroll into a good course in university that will get you into a lucrative career path. This is the formula if we seek stability. Earn the money so we can buy whatever we want. Foolproof. However, in pursuit of wealth and material possession, we trade your life and happiness. In response, we seek pockets of happiness through travelling and buying goods to reward ourselves. That's the kind of life I've led anyway.

Those pockets of happiness were short-lived, until I discovered my calling for crafting. Ideas of starting DIY blogs and teaching people how to create danced in my mind, inspired by my favorite show "How It's Made."

Then I met my partner and she had a small fashion business - selling streetwear apparels and handmade bracelets. I love crafting bracelets and soon found myself exploring different crafts like leather crafting, terrarium making, calligraphy and woodworking. I dabbled in them all with my mildly ADHD mind hungry for new experiences.

In 2018, I found pottery. I told myself this is it. Is like finding a soul mate right? When you know you know. Pottery became the craft that stuck with me. Here are the top 10 reasons why:

  1. The versatility of pottery allows me to transform raw clay into whatever I can imagine, fueling my creativity and constantly challenging my limits.

  2. So much thought and effort has put into making every creation.

  3. I love love love how ceramic product exudes warmth and rawness especially handmade. It gives the space a character.

  4. Pottery is an endless journey of learning. There's so much in it, you can never stop learning.

  5. It teaches patience, positivity, and the art of taking things lightly – essential life skills. ie. when you spend 8 hours on the piece and it didn't survive the firing.

  6. It forces you to be in present and takes your mind of things!

  7. While wedging can be a workout for the arms, the overall craft is relaxing and therapeutic.

  8. My oldest creations still excite me. Even though it looks like it is same design, it's really not. Every piece is unique.

  9. My creations put a smile on my face and on yours too!

  10. Every stage is crucial to get to the final product. Despite the long process, I still enjoy it. And through my creations, I hope you can feel the love, effort, and passion!

So when you're getting something handmade for yourself or for someone else. Please know that what you're doing is much more that just a transaction. It is a fuel to the maker!

Sounds good and if you want to try this for yourself, feel free to sign up to my classes available to experience it first hand!

Thanks for reading!
