Handmade is a form of luxury

I did a little survey on my Instagram more than a week ago, questioning the reason why people buy handmade items. I had many interesting answers that got me thinking and thought I should blog about it.

Personally, I have always love creating things - a maker. I love researching and figuring how certain items are made - a sense of satisfaction in the process. My craft journey started from stringing gemstone beads, to leather crafting, then to learning the basics of woodworking and finally, pottery. Perhaps due to my thrifty nature, by making the product I can in return save some money. Little did I know that handmade products are worth so much more than its value.

Handmade is a form of luxury and why people choose to buy them

Owning handmade products can be associated with a certain status.

First of all, it reveals your unique personality and distinctive style. Using or wearing a handmade product often means you possess a unique item that sets you apart from others. Being the sole owner of such an item can make you stand out in a crowd, showcasing your individuality and distinctive style.

Secondly, high quality handmade products involve a high level of skill, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. The artisanal quality and artistry involved in creating these items can be seen as a mark of luxury and sophistication, enhancing their perceived status.

Thirdly, handmade items often come with a story behind their creation, reflecting the personal journey and passion of the maker. This authenticity and connection to the maker can add an additional level of prestige and status to the product.

Fourthly, choosing to purchase handmade products is also seen as a way of supporting makers. Purchasing a handmade item is more than just a transaction; it represents a meaningful connection between you and the maker. By buying from a maker, you acknowledge their craftsmanship and support their aspirations. Some customers choose to support makers because they value knowing where their money goes and appreciate the personal touch behind each creation.

Fifthly, owning a one-and-only design that gives you a sense of exclusivity and status. They are crafted with the distinctive style of the maker which makes the design are not only one-of-a-kind but also timeless, unlike mass-produced products.

Lastly, each product made by hand is made with great care by a person who is passionate about their work. Each item is made by makers with a lot of love, effort, and attention to detail. The labour-intensive nature of handmade production often contributes to the higher cost of these products. Affording a higher-priced handmade product can be seen as a sign of higher financial status.

The quality, uniqueness, and emotional connection that come with supporting makers and their craft are just a few of the other reasons why people choose to invest in handmade products.

What are you thoughts? Let me know if you agree or disagree.

Thanks for reading! :D
